UTJ Signs Support Agreement with Government; Shinui Cannot Tolerate any Money going for Chareidim

United Torah Jewry will vote for the national budget for 2005 and the Arrangements Law under an agreement reached Sunday between party representatives and a Finance Ministry representative. The agreement includes a transfer of NIS 290 million for yeshivas, kollelim, talmudei Torah and other educational institutions as well as a pledge by the government not to impose further disproportionate cutbacks on funding for the chareidi sector. As soon as it was announced, Shinui said it would not vote for a budget that includes money for chareidim.

Excavation Stoppage Extended at Cemetery in Acco

Though little concrete progress has been made towards finding an engineering solution to prevent the desecration of graves in the ancient Jewish cemetery in Acco it was decided to extend the order to cease excavation work at the site. On Monday, prime minister Sharon ordered the Transportation Ministry to wait another two weeks while searching for a solution. The order came after a meeting between Sharon, Government Secretary Yisrael Maimon, and UTJ MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni.

The Knesset Education Committee gave final approval for a proposal by Education Minister L. Livnat to include Beitar Illit and Modi'in Illit in the extended school day program and the nutrition project. At first the program included all other areas with similar socioeconomic profiles, but left out those major chareidi cities.

Thousands of New York and New Jersey residents participated in the levaya for HaRav Eliezer Geldzahler zt"l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Ohr Yisroel in New York, who passed away at the age of 46 as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident ten months ago in Netanya.
