MK Rabbi Ravitz Works to Block Passage of Gambling Laws

by Eliezer Rauchberger

"I am opposed to a casino in Israel. Setting up a casino is not a good idea and its significance and repercussions would definitely be detrimental. There is no justification for such a move," said Education Minister L. Livnat, in response to a question posed by MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz.

She also said she disagrees with claims that a casino would be a worthwhile venture because it would institutionalize gambling, which today takes place illegally on a large scale. "I think the enforcement processes should be boosted to counter illegal gambling activity, like illegal drug sales."

Earlier, Rabbi Ravitz called on the Education Minister to publicly denounce the casino idea and gaming in general. "The casino is destructive," he said. "As everyone knows, a person who throws dice is disqualified as a witness [according to halochoh], is not trusted and is not accepted in society."

MK Ofir Pines (Labor) seconded the demand that the Education Minister express disapproval against the idea to build a casino in any location in Israel, stressing that if the whole country gambled, children could not be asked to refrain from gambling, too.
