Syria Under Pressure from All Sides

Syria has suffered serious setbacks in Lebanon and will
probably suffer more in the near future. At the same time,
Israel is working to pin the blame for the recent terror
bombing in Tel Aviv on Damascus, and the United States has
had running complaints against Syria for its attitude and
behavior towards its neighbor Iraq and its support of world
terror.

Many askonim involved in the arrangements for the
Eleventh Siyum HaShas long sought to find a way to channel
the enormous energy that is generated by the effort to reach
a broader audience. One such effort that was organized this

Director of Ministry of Trade Warns about Business on
Shabbos

"The issue of preventing the opening of businesses on Shabbos
has not received a serious legislative solution," warned
Raanan Dinur, director-general of the Ministry of Trade and
Industry. "There will be an outbreak to the point where it
will be impossible to halt the opening of businesses on
Shabbos.
NRP Split Official: Eitam and Levy Set Up Independent

The split in the National Religious Party became official
with Effi Eitam and Yitzchak Levy's announcement that they
were resigning from the NRP to form an independent party
called Religious Zionism.
Gala Siyum HaShas in Melbourne Australia

Close to a thousand people packed the Carlton Crest Hotel on
Sunday night 18 Adar I to attend the Melbourne Siyum HaShas.
People from all walks and strands of life from the frum
community participated at the festive meal held in the honor
of those completing Shas.
Education Ministry's Dovrat Report Enters Trial Stage in
12 Local Authorities

According to the Education Ministry, 12 local authorities
will begin preparations in the coming weeks to implement the
Dovrat Report with the start of the 5766 school year. On the
list of local authorities chosen are Ofakim, Ariel, Dimona,
Herzliya, Holon, Haifa, Natzrat Illit, Ramat Gan, Ramle,
Shfaram, the Gilboa Regional Council and the Shlomi Regional
Council.
House Committee Expected to Uphold Gorlovsky's Immunity

The majority of Knesset House Committee members are expected
to vote again in support of the decision not to strip MK
Michael Gorlovsky (Likud) of his immunity in the double
voting scandal in spite of a High Court ruling against the
committee's previous decision not to take away Gorlovsky's
immunity.
Jerusalem Pays Religious Council Workers

Jerusalem Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky reached an agreement
with the Jerusalem division of the Histadrut on the transfer
of salaries to the city's Religious Council workers and
payments for fuel expenses at mikvo'os around the
city.

Daf Yomi — Innovation and Inspiration
Daf Hayomi is a wonderful example of a modern innovation
within the Jewish religion. It shows that there is room for
new initiatives, that the Torah community can come up with
things that are genuinely new even while remaining strictly
within the bounds of the Torah.
