Steps to Stop Court Quickie Conversion Concession

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni sent a letter early this week to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon demanding that he have the government table a bill ensuring that conversions are performed according to halochoh, and blocking the High Court's recent ruling in favor of quickie Reform and Conservative conversions performed outside of Israel.


High Court: Law Against Employing Jews on Shabbos Does not Contradict the Basic Law

The High Court of Justice on Monday said that the laws prohibiting employment of Jews on Shabbos do not contradict the Basic Law: Freedom of Occupation because the law is in keeping with "the general values of the State of Israel as a Jewish state."

In a dramatic change, a broad array of Gaza settler organizations proposed early this week that they move voluntarily, together, to the Nitzanim dunes area located between Ashdod and Ashkelon.


Betzedek Files Suit Against Shinui Slush Fund

Betzedek filed a High Court petition on Sunday 23 Adar II against the agreement Prime Minister Ariel Sharon signed with Shinui for its support of the state budget in exchange for NIS 700 million in funding. The petition was filed against the Prime Minister, Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, the government, the Knesset and Shinui.


Scheme to Undermine Kosher Cell Phones Uncovered

"The kosher cellular phones by Mirs do not permit breaches [to the Internet] and fully meet the requirements set by Vaadat HaRabbonim LeInyonei Tikshoret," said Mirs CEO Avraham Bourstein during a meeting with chareidi reporters at the Vishnitz Hotel in Bnei Brak called in response to media reports that the safeguards in the new Mirs cell phones can be easily bypassed and a connection to the Internet may be established. Bourstein said that the reports are based on an obvious attempt at fraud.

Deputy Welfare Minister MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz told Yated Ne'eman, "The present High Court ruling, like previous rulings, is designed to transform Israel into a secular state. In their ruling [the judges] abuse the principles of Judaism and the halochoh handed down to us through the generations since we became a people.
