A [Modern-Day] Simple Jew
by Raizel Foner

The Mental and Emotional Benefits of Motherhood
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Raising children is mentally enriching for mothers and fathers, according to some leading brain scientists, like Michael Merzenich at the University of California, San Francisco. Becoming a parent, they say, can power up the mind with uniquely motivated learning. Having a baby is "a revolution for the brain," Dr. Merzenich says.

Out of the Blue
by C. Ofek

At five thirty in the morning, the Warsaw Ghetto was surrounded by S.S. troops. Sheindel looked apprehensively at her two little boys sleeping restlessly on the floor of the bunker. Where could she hide them from the Nazi beasts? If only Hillel her husband were here, they could have made the decision together; as he had many friends on the Aryan side. He had been carted off several weeks ago, and had not returned. Sheindel knew that her time was running out.

Starting a New Week

by Raizel Foner

Walking with my son to his Gemora teacher's house on Motzei Shabbos, we passed the grand opening of the new Angel Bakery in our neighborhood. They were giving out free rolls and rugelach. And they were packed!

Expressing Feelings to Children
by H. Freedman

Evening. The children are sleeping. You're sipping a cup of coffee in the kitchen and thinking about the day gone by. In retrospect, it appears you wouldn't have won the "Mommy Medal" today . . .

MODERN DAY MESHOLIM AND MUSSAR
Whodunit?

by Bayla Gimmel

"She" is not the only bad guy who causes confusion and thereby ruins relationships. "She" shares the spotlight with "he" "they" and "it."

Reminiscent of the Hebrew-English conundrum: `She' is he and `he' is who and `who' is me.

And woe is me when we get our pronouns all mixed up and get entrapped in unguarded tongues.

Exercise for the Spirit
by Risa Rotman

Exercise Teacher: Good morning to you all. O.K. ladies, let's get going. We're here to work. Step Touch four, three, two...We've got to get those hearts pumping. Yes, Saraleh, you wanted to tell us something?

Do You Abuse Your Feet?
by Dr. Reuven Bruner, Ph.D.

Women are especially likely to cause harm to their feet in the pursuit of fashion: Women account for nearly 90 percent of all operations performed to correct common foot disorders such as bunions, hammertoes and neuromas. The shoes women wear are the biggest culprits, especially dress shoes which are typically characterized by a tight fit, narrow toe boxes, high heels and shapes that don't conform to the foot.

POET'S CORNER

Poets Anonymous

Wouldn't it be a pity
Not to own up that this ditty
Was carefully planned
And written
By the person I call me?

Denial of its creation
Would be truly abnegation
Of the thoughts
And the feelings
Of the self I want to be.

Should I put my name in print
Or by initials merely hint?
Should I show-off
Or conceal
My true identity?

Should my self-esteem be boosted
Or my ego be reduce-ed?
Which is better
For my soul —
Fame or privacy?

It's so hard to decide,
Should it be pride or hide?
So I remain
For the time being
Yours,
