To the Editor:
As Purim approaches I would like to warn old and young alike
about the use of firecrackers and more dangerous things as
well by recounting what happened to us last year.
The day after Purim we gathered up the leftover caps and
packed them in a plastic bag, which we then closed to store
away for this year. We naively left the bag on the table. I
sat down with my one-year-old son and he moved the bag a
bit.
Suddenly we heard an explosion. Fire came out followed by
white smoke, and then my son burst out with screaming and
terrible crying. I jumped up and whisked him away from the
smoke and toward the kitchen sink where I extinguished
everything under a heavy stream of water. To my great horror
his fingernails and the skin on his fingers were gone (all
this from caps!). Thanks to Hashem Yisborach's
chessed, through the dedicated care of a melamed
who is a fabulous baal chessed, after three harrowing
weeks and much suffering his hands healed completely and no
scars remain.
Dear parents and children: Please keep in mind that all this
happened because of simple firecrackers, and miracles cannot
be counted on to take place every day.
Hoping Purim brings us true spiritual joy,
S.D.S.
