High Percentage of Orloh in Summer Fruits
By Betzalel Kahn
Kashrus figures are reissuing warnings that fruits sold this
summer will contain a higher percentage of orloh
fruits than in previous years. The increase follows a wave of
tree plantings in 5762 due to the minimal amount of planting
in the previous Shmittah year, largely thanks to battles
waged by the Institute for Torah-Based Agricultural Research.
This year the trees from these orchards that have begun
bearing fruit are orloh.
Some fruits, such as grapes, have a considerable percentage
of orloh for the first time in years. Other fruits in
which orloh is found include blueberries, peaches
(10%), apricots (6%) and cactus fruits (sabras -- over
10%).
Recently one green grocer in Jerusalem's Machaneh Yehuda
Market was found selling grapes without a kashrus
certificate, smuggled in from a farmer at Moshav Tabor in the
Jordan Valley whose vines are orloh.
Kashrus figures say the public should be particularly wary
when buying fruit this year by patronizing only stores with a
valid kashrus certificate issued by a mehadrin
organization.
