New Head of El Al Pledges Not to Fly on Shabbos
by Betzalel Kahn
Prof. Izzi Borovitz, managing director of Arkia, one of the
new controlling owners of El Al and the designated company
chairman, pledged that El Al would preserve the status quo by
not flying on Shabbos.
During a meeting with Borovitz, Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger
voiced public concerns that following privatization the
company might alter its policy on refraining from operations
on Shabbos. Chief Rabbi Metzger stressed the importance of El
Al, as a Jewish company, grounding its planes on Shabbos in
order to help preserve the country's Jewish character and to
respect the sensibilities of the entire Jewish public.
At the end of the meeting Borovitz announced El Al would not
fly on Shabbos, maintaining the policy it has followed since
its founding. "As a Jewish company in Israel we must respect
the public's sensitivities in Israel and this has been done,"
Prof. Borovitz told Chief Rabbi Metzger.
