Labor Court Cancels Fine for Shabbos Desecration
by G. Kleiman

The National Labor Court reversed a ruling against the Shomrat Tissman Furniture Company, which was convicted of employing a Jewish worker on Shabbos.

A Labor Ministry inspector visited the store on Shabbos and issued a report for employing a Jewish woman who admitted she worked on Shabbos. The report was marked 6:30 p.m. and dated May 2000. The labor court ruled that the claimant failed to prove the time listed on the report was during "the Jewish Shabbat" although it was within the time frame of "the secular Shabbat" since it was before midnight of that date. Based on this dubious argument the court reversed the conviction and cancelled the fine of NIS 7,000 ($1,600).
