U.S. Pressing Ahead with "Road Map" Peace Plan
by Yated Ne'eman Staff and M. Plaut

The U.S. seems to be planning to move ahead with its Road Map to peace in the Middle East whether Israel is ready or not. Israel has asked for it to be put in hold until after its elections, scheduled for January 28. Instead, the United States wants to complete the draft and bring it to a Quartet meeting -- composed of the United States, the United Nations, the European Union and Russia -- on December 20.

Tax Change Could Hurt Western Immigrants
by Yated Neeman Staff

When a long-debated tax reform goes into effect in Israel on Jan. 1, some immigrants will have much higher tax bills.

Many immigrants, especially those retiring to Israel, came with the understanding that they would not have to pay Israeli taxes on income from their overseas assets. American immigrants generally pay U.S. taxes on that money.

Allegations that UN Agency Tolerates Terrorism
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The Israeli army said its soldiers fired on the walled UN compound inside the refugee camp killing British senior manager Ian Hook, because Palestinian gunmen were shooting at them from inside and Hook's cellphone appeared to them to be a grenade. The United Nations vigorously denied that Palestinian gunmen shot from their building.

Ukraine Investigates Beating of Charedim
by Yated Neeman Staff

A month ago there was a clash between residents of the central Ukrainian city of Uman, the burial place of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav, and a group of young chasidim from Israel. Three Breslaver chasidim involved, all approximately 16 years old, were allegedly beaten up.

IDF Unit Said to be in Western Iraq
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Members of an Israeli reconnaissance unit have been operating in western Iraq for several weeks in an attempt to locate Iraqi Scud missile bunkers, Time Magazine reported this week. There are vast open areas in western Iraq where such missiles could be hidden. Also that part of Iraq is closest to Israel.

Former French Ambassador Defames Religious French Jews
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Eli Barnaby, former Israeli ambassador to France, who has just finished his term in office, has defamed orthodox Jews in an interview in Le Monde, saying: "[They are] like peripheral factions, living their Jewish religion as separatists." In France the term "separatist" has overtones of terrorism and political violence. Such a serious accusation feeds the incitement against the Jews in France.

Tehilla Maoz, Hy'd, Library Dedicated in Moreshes Batya
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The Tehilla Maoz Library, for Moreshes Batya, was officially dedicated to honor the memory of a young girl who was brutally murdered at the Sbarro massacre in Yerushalayim 16 months ago.

OPINION & COMMENT

Keep the Shabbos Holy

One time there was a fatal accident on Shabbos, and Maran the Brisker Rov zt"l remarked that Shabbos was collecting its debt. His talmidim asked: Aren't there traffic accidents all week? To which the Rov replied: There are many causes for traffic accidents. But when one happens on Shabbos, there is no need to search for the cause of that accident, for its cause is clear and evident to all.

OBSERVATIONS

HOME & FAMILY

The Other Side of the Coin
based on an article by R. Chadshai

A young husband comes home on Motzaei Shabbos and not surprisingly, sees his wife in the kitchen. "Let's go and visit my parents," he suggests.

"And who's going to clean up here?"

Additional Luach Information

In chutz le'aretz from Wednesday night, the eve of 30 Kislev (the night of Dec. 4-Dec. 5, 2001) vesen tal u- motor levrocho is now added in Shemoneh Esrieh until Pesach. See Kitzur Shulchan Oruch 19:5.

"Some are accustomed to pray Yom Kippur Koton (on erev Rosh Chodesh)...The Maharom of Korduviro would call it Kippur Koton since on it would be atoned the sins of the whole month...The seforim write that even if someone doesn't fast, he should do teshuvah on this day and remedy the sins of the whole month since this is the last day of each month just like erev Rosh HaShanah is the last day of the whole year" (Mishnah Berurah 417:4).
