To The Editor,
A year ago we visited Eretz Yisroel, and were shopping one
evening on Rechov Rabbi Akiva in Bnei Brak. I found something
I required in one shop. As I fished for some change in my
cash bag, the shopkeeper asked if there was any significance
in the cash bag. I explained that all banks in England give
change in such little plastic bags.
He then extracted from a safe place just such a cash bag
containing a large sum of money in English banknotes. A
customer had recently paid for his purchase and left the cash
on the counter. He was keeping the aveidah until its
owner would reclaim it!
A few weeks ago, we were again on Rabbi Akiva Street. I
inquired of the shopkeeper whether the lost money had been
claimed. He replied that a friend had put an advert in an
English paper but no one had responded. He still keeps the
money safe!
This is a real kiddush Hashem! Had the shopkeeper
pocketed the money, no one would've known, but out of
yiras Shomayim and a genuine desire to be meishiv
aveidah he still keeps the lost money safe, "ad derosh
ochicho oso." If the person who lost the money wishes to
claim it, he can contact Mr. Yehuda Geltzer, at 03-579-2871
and give simonim.
Of this we can surely say, "Mi ke'amcho Yisroel."
Sincerely,
Mrs. Rutenberg
