by Yitzchok Roth and M. Plaut
On Wednesday afternoon 6 Kislev, Elchanan Chakun, owner of
Photo Alain on Yechezkel Street in Geula, pushed 71-year-old
Rav Yehudah Samet several times, eventually knocking him
down. Rav Samet hit his head on a police van as he was
falling, and a week later died from that injury.
Death at Emmanuel
by A. Zisman
At around 6:00 p.m., as the lights of Emmanuel came into
view, passengers on the bus from Bnei Brak had begun to stand
up, straighten the wrinkles out of their clothes and gather
their belongings -- when the bomb went off. Arab terrorists
lying in wait on the hill alongside the road detonated two
bombs. The explosions were not particularly powerful, but
were enough to kill several of the passengers and to cause
considerable damage to the bus.

New Studies Try to Count All and Only Jews
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The 2000 National Jewish Population Survey, which was conducted
last year, expects to release its results some time in the next six
to nine months. One of the most controversial findings of the
previous survey conducted in 1990 was the 52% intermarriage
rate it reported. The new results are planned to follow a system
intended to clear up some of the controversy.
CER Protests Destruction of R' Yisroel's Grave and Increasing
Russian Antisemitism
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The grave and tombstone of the Gaon Reb Yisroel Salanter,
founder of the Mussar movement in yeshivas, was
totally destroyed by vandals. Daubings of "Death to the Jews"
and swastikas were painted around the area. A wall
commemorating the holocaust was also destroyed and the gate
surrounding the cemetery was pulled down.
