Terror Attacks in New York City and Washington DC; Palestinians Celebrate the Destruction as a "Victory"; Israeli Jews Pray for the Victims
by M. Plaut and Yated Ne'eman Staff

On Tuesday morning, four commercial airlines were hijacked in the United States: two planes of American Airlines and two of United Airlines. They were commercial flights full of passengers. Two crashed into the World Trade Center, collapsing both 110 story towers. A third crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and the fourth crashed in western Pennsylvania. Hundreds -- perhaps thousands -- lost their lives in a vicious, cruel, mindless spasm of destruction.

In Honor of Shmittah and its Heroes
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

This past Sunday, 21 Elul, two stirring events of public kiddush Hashem marked the end of the shmittah year of 5761 -- a seudas mitzvah in Tel Aviv and a massive. moving parade in Bnei Brak.

The Gaon Said to Write a Prusbul Throughout the World

by Rav Stern

Even two hundred and four years after the Vilna Gaon passed away, we still meet new chiddushim of his. Lately a manuscript has been discovered, which was written by someone very close to the Gaon namely, HaRav Mordechai Epstein zt"l, the son of the famous Rav Arye Leib zt"l, the baal Hapardes. It contains more than seventy items which he heard from the Gaon.

Israeli Government `Satisfied' at Durban Outcome
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The UN World Conference on Racism concluded by adopting a declaration that did not specifically criticize Israel, but which recognized the "plight" of the Palestinians and the injustice of slavery and colonialism, after nine days of contentious debate that repeatedly threatened to unravel the gathering.

IDF Surrounds Jenin
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

On Monday the IDF, in response to a wave of bombs, surrounded the Arab city of Jenin. Some months ago they went into Jenin but left after a few hours. This time the operation appears to be planned to last longer.

Sharp Criticism of Advertisements Encouraging Working Careers for Bnei Torah
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Rabbonim and marbitzei Torah have had sharp criticism of a new wave of advertisements encouraging avreichim to leave the beis medrash to study a trade or profession. In fact, such appeals seek to change the career aspirations of bnei Torah and to create the impression that a "revolution" is in the works among bnei Torah who are taking up these courses of study.

Kohanim Traveling on Highway 444 Must Keep Right
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

In response to a question from the moro de'asra of Modi'in Illit HaRav Meir Kessler, HaRav Sholom Yosef Eliashiv has determined that kohanim traveling on Highway 444 must remain in the right lane. This directive pertains to the part of the road from its intersection with Highway 443 until the Chadid cemetery junction only. It was recently discovered that part of the road runs over a burial cave.

Transport of Consignment on Shabbos Averted
by Y. Ariel

At the intervention of communal leaders in Haifa and Kiryat Ata and UTJ Knesset members, the Shabbos shipment of an over- sized consignment from Israel Shipyards to the Haifa refineries was prevented. In the presence of the chairman of the Knesset Internal Affairs Committee Rabbi Moshe Gafni, Government Secretary Gideon Saar repeated his pledge of government policy not to move freight on Shabbos.

OPINION & COMMENT

His Kingdom Rules All

What does a new year mean to most of the people in the world? "Celebrating" with eating and drinking and wild abandon. Have a blast in honor of the new year.

Rosh Hashona in New York
Translated from the Hebrew
Anashim Achim by A. Harel

The interior of the car was sweltering.

"September this year is hotter than usual, and you sit there cooped up in a closed metal box, motorized, for... say... about sixteen hours a day. Whew! Hmmm? What's that? What did you say, Mister?"

Additional Luach Information

Erev Rosh HaShanah falls on Tuesday, Sep. 18. Hatoros Nedorim must be made on Erev Rosh HaShanah. In addition, a pruzbull, to be able to collect debts, is made, according to most poskim, at the end of the Shmitta year on Erev Rosh HaShanah 5762. This morning we say tachanun at Selichos but not at Shacharis or Minchah.

Rosh HaShanah falls on Tuesday, Sep. 18 and Wednesday, Sep. 19.

Thursday, 3 Tishrei (Sep. 20) is Tzom Gedalyah on which we fast in memory of the killing of Gedalya ben Achikom who was appointed by Nevuchadnezer to protect the Jews after the destruction of the first Beis HaMikdash.

The custom is to make kaporos during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah.

The minhag is for the Mora DeAsra to say a deroshah on Shabbos Shuvah to awaken the olam to teshuvah and inform the community of the halochos of Yom Kippur and Sukkos (see Mishnah Berurah chap. 429).

It is a mitzvah to eat on Erev Yom Kippur.

Yom Kippur falls on Thursday, 10 Tishrei (Sep. 27). Yizkor is said on Yom Kippur.

On Yom Kippur one must observe all the five inuyim.

Kiddush Levonoh is said on motzei Yom Kippur for those who do not follow the Gaon's ruling to make Kiddush Levonoh during the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah.

The minhag is to start building a Sukkah on Motzei Yom Kippur.

Shiurim for Yom Kippur

When the doctor does not require a person to eat normally but rather he or she can eat less than the halachic shiur, the person may drink every nine minutes a volume of 40 cubic centimeters of liquid and eat 34 cubic centimeters of food.

A cubic centimeter and a gram are an identical amount only in water where 40 grams of water is equal to 40 cubic centimeters of volume. In other drinks the amounts are not identical, and as far as food is concerned there is no comparison between weight and volume.

The weight of a cookie is approximately 18 grams.

The weight of a matzoh is 15-18 grams but it is 34 cubic centimeters.

The weight of 40 cubic centimeters of milk is 41 grams.

The weight of 40 cubic centimeters of grape juice is 44 grams.

The weight of 34 cubic centimeters of natural honey is 57 grams.

(Birur Halocho Kamma and IV Orach Chaim 612)
