Giant Chesed Fair In New York City
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The "Chesed L'Yisrael" organization was established just half
a year ago in New York to serve as a bridge between
institutions here in Israel and donors and benefactors in the
United States. The organization's purpose is to assist
institutions in Israel in light of the terribly painful and
difficult security and economic situation that plagues us by
way of fundraising. "Chesed L'Yisrael" will be mounting a
Giant Chesed Fair at the Show Piers in Manhattan, New York,
on Kislev 4-6, 5763; November 9-11, 2002.
The Fair's motto is "American Jewry Salutes, Contributes To,
and Buys From Israel," and it will feature the major
emergency medical, aid and volunteer organizations in Israel.
Several yeshivas are reportedly also planning to attend.
"Organizations from across the Israeli spectrum will stand
shoulder to shoulder in the knowledge that today, in light of
the current situation, all must unite in ahavas
Yisroel. Disagreements must be left aside, with the
understanding that those who provide care and aid are the
ones who can really bring about Jewish unity," exclaims Mr.
Ephraim Shreiber, chairman of the Fair's public committee.
The Fair is being mounted in cooperation with the Ministry of
Tourism, the Public Relations Office, the Ministry of
Education and other public bodies in an effort to strengthen
ties with Israel. Featured at the Fair will be special
events, such as vacation packages in Israel, sponsored by the
Ministry of Tourism, musical performances, and other such
presentations. In addition, the event's directors will
arrange for organized tours of the Fair for community
leaders, donors, etc.
The idea of the event is already enjoying tremendous support
in the United States, and its organizers are expecting a huge
turnout. Rabbi Menachem Tzeiger, director of "Chesed
L'Yisrael," pointed out that, "the Fair's Israeli
registration center is being flooded with hundreds of calls
from those who are interested in taking part. Because there
are only 500 booths available at the Fair, registration will
likely be closed earlier than we had expected."
"There's no doubt," said a director of one of the volunteer
organizations, "that the Fair is something that all we need
like the air we breathe. If donors find it difficult to come
to us in Israel, we will come to them so that they can join
with us and support the important activities of our
organizations here."
