Israel Determined to Achieve its Objectives in
Incursion
by Mordecai Plaut and Yated Ne'eman Staff
Israel explained that its incursions into Palestinian-
controlled areas (area A) are a specific response to numerous
warnings about upcoming terror attacks, and it will not
withdraw until it has dealt with those warnings -- but it
plans to withdraw then.
A SAD SERMON: Reform Leader Equates Chareidim and Islamic
Terrorists
by Rabbi Avi Shafran
It was too good to last. The post-attack-on-America spirit of
unity and good will, the inspiring altruism and powerful
heroism, were all real and are still apparent. But we have
now, sadly, seen some very different things as well.
MK Lapid Reprimanded by Knesset Ethics Committee Following
a Complaint by MK Gafni
by Eliezer Rauchberger
The Knesset Ethics Committee decided to register an official
complaint against MK Yosef (Tomy) Lapid, the chairman of
Shinui, following a complaint lodged against him to the
Committee by MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni concerning an article by
Lapid published in Ma'ariv about one-and-a- half years
ago, in which he wrote that the internal threat from the
chareidim was much more serious than the threat Israel faced
from its external enemies. The article contained severe
statements besmirching the chareidi population.
Australian Jewish Orthodox Schools Struggle for Funding
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Australian government funding of private schools has become a
campaign issue in the upcoming Australian federal elections
scheduled for November 10. As such, Jewish schools were
visited by candidates, including current Education Minister
Dr. David Kemp who visited Adass Israel to announce an
extension of a funding guarantee given by his Liberal
party.
Lev L'Achim Enrollment Drives Meet With Resistance from
Secular School Officials
by Moshe Schapiro
Until now, the secular school system in Eretz Yisroel has not
shown any signs of concern over the fact that it is
consistently losing several thousand students each year to
the religious school system. Media reports to this effect are
heard occasionally, but besides evoking some vapid statements
by a handful of anti-religious politicians, nothing much ever
comes of them.
Appeal Against Jerusalem's Highway 9: Environmental
Hazard
by S. Fried
The Ramot Environmental Forum has joined with the Forum for
Public Transportation in an appeal to the Jerusalem Regional
Court to put a temporary work stoppage order on the projected
paving of Highway number 9 between Motza on the main
Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway, and Derech Alon, the "Ramot
Road." The new road would relieve the congestion at the
entrance to Jerusalem, since traffic for the northern
neighborhoods could bypass the current bottleneck near Givat
Shaul.
Finance Subcommittee to Discuss the Crisis Facing Chareidi
Organizations
by Eliezer Rauchberger
There was a sharp confrontation last week in the Knesset
Finance Committee between the chareidi representatives and
deputy Attorney General Amnon de Hertoch regarding the major
cutbacks in the Education Ministry's support of chareidi
cultural institutions.
Modi'in Will Receive the Status of a City
by Betzalel Kahn
This past Tuesday (29 Tishrei), Minister of Interior Affairs
Eli Yishai adopted the recommendations of the committee for
the granting of the status of a city to Modi'in. Yishai
signed the orders which canceled the local council of Modi'in
and declared the place a city.
Jews Buy Up Land Around Shimon Hatzadik Neighborhood
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
A group of Jewish investors from Israel and abroad is set to
sign a deal to purchase 18 dunam of land near the Sheikh
Jarah neighborhood, close to the Green Line in East Jerusalem
according to a report by Nadav Shragai in Ha'aretz.
The move will ensure Jewish control over the area around the
nearby Shimon Hatzadik neighborhood.
OPINION &
COMMENT
How to Defeat Terror
In the six weeks that have passed since the spectacular
terrorist attack on America, fear has gripped the citizens of
the world's only superpower. People go about their business
but they are cutting down on their discretionary activities.
OBSERVATIONS
Observations: This is no Altalena
By Yated Ne'eman Staff and Moshe Arens
Although more than fifty years have passed since the
distressing Altalena affair when Jews killed fellow Jews on
the boat called "Altalena," the subject refuses to disappear
from the news.

UREI BETUV
Judging Favorably
based on a true story
by Raizel Foner
The days before Succos were some of his favorite days in the
year. As he walked down the busy streets, enjoying the
perfect-for-Succos weather, he smiled at the sight of the
makeshift booths that had sprung up selling pictures of
rabbonim and sparkling Succa decorations, and at the festive
music blaring from tape recorders.
