Construction of Security Fence Underway
by M Plaut and Yated Ne'eman Staf
This is the headline that Israeli political leaders sought as
they began immediate work clearing the ground for the first
two-kilometer stretch of what is planned as an eventual 360
kilometer barrier to keep terrorists and car thieves out of
Israel.
Bush: Still Waiting for a Peace Partner
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
After meeting Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at the
White House Monday, President Bush suggested that conditions
were not yet ripe for a ministerial Middle East summit
"because nobody has confidence in the emerging Palestinian
government" even after the "reforms" recently announced by
Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat.
Kosher Meat at Low Risk for Mad Cow Disease
by S. Baruchi
Kosher beef purchased at authorized locations poses no risk
to consumers says Dr. Alex Levental, head of Public Health
Services at the Ministry of Health. "Shechita has a
big advantage in terms of protecting against mad-cow disease.
[At non-kosher slaughterhouses they] stun the cow before
slaughtering it, causing the [type of] protein that causes
the disease to leave the brain and disperse throughout the
body. As a result the disease spreads."
Flights from Ben-Gurion Airport Still Not Permitted to
Kohanim
by Betzalel Kahn
After a two-day survey of takeoff routes last week showed
many planes departing from Ben-Gurion International Airport
still pass over the Cholon Cemetery, gedolei haposkim
announced that international flights are not yet permitted to
Kohanim. However, due to concerted, ongoing efforts by United
Torah Jewry activists 40 percent of the planes took a new
flight path that has no problems, according to survey
results.
Immigrant Couples Will No Longer be Required to Prove They
are Jewish in Order to Marry
by Betzalel Kahn
The State Prosecutor's Office notified the High Court last
week that there are no grounds to prevent the abolishment of
the special botei din commissioned by the Chief
Rabbinate to verify whether immigrants registering for
marriage through the rabbinate are indeed Jewish.
Unusual Grand Siyum in Johannesburg Shows Universal Appeal of
Torah
by Yated Ne'eman South African Staff
The posters announcing the siyum to be held on the eve
of Rosh Chodesh Tammuz failed to reveal the nature of this
amazing event. The notice listed completion of "Shas
Mishnayos", "gemora Beitzah" and "gemora Makkos."
What it did not say is that the celebrants were a community
of professionals, business people and other students, many of
whom only started learning in the last few years.
Jerusalem Street Named After HaRav Dovid Povarsky
by Betzalel Kahn
Following efforts by Degel Hatorah representatives on the
Jerusalem Municipality, the City Naming Committee decided
last week to name a street in the Ezras Torah neighborhood
after the late Ponevezh rosh hayeshiva, HaRav Dovid
Povarsky.

Reflections on Trigger-Happy Police
The facts are chilling -- and so are the reactions.
The difficult security situation puts people on edge,
especially those charged with preserving public safety. At
any time and in any place anyone, and especially anyone in a
uniform, can suddenly be the object of a heartless and cruel
attack. Sometimes, being quick on the draw can mean the
difference between the death of a terrorist and the deaths of
dozens of innocent victims.

Tante Dvoireh
by Anni Rephun Fruchter
Four sisters had Mutti, each one a gem. Ziviya, the oldest,
was born in Kolbuszowa during the reign of the Austrian-
Hungarian empire. When I met her in 1929, it was Poland. When
I think of her, I remember her as a tall and stately
grandmother, well-dressed and graceful.
