Draft Arrangement Continued Until Rosh Chodesh

On Monday, 5 Teves, the Knesset approved, by a large
majority, a temporary order according the Minister of
Defense the authority to defer the drafting of bnei
yeshiva. This temporary order will be in effect until
rosh chodesh Sivan, as a result of the suggestion of
Rabbi Gafni, who asked that sufficient time be given to the
extend the law or pass a more comprehensive one after the
Knesset returns from its Pesach recess.
Attorney General says Gov't Should not Negotiate or Make
Important Agreements

Attorney General Elyakim Rubinstein, in a sharp letter to
Prime Minister Barak, warned the government in general, and
the prime minister in particular, against conducting
negotiations with the Palestinians and concluding an
agreement with them at this time when it might appear as if
it is done because of the imminent prime ministerial
elections.
Violence Continues: 54 Wounded in Netanya Bombing; Kahane
Couple Murdered; Media Fans Talk of Revenge

Security measures are being tightened throughout the country
following a car-bomb attack in Netanya Monday in which 34
people were wounded, one of them seriously, apparently
someone connected to the bombing.
GDP Rises by 5.9% in 2000

The Israeli economy grew rapidly in 2000, as real gross
domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.9 percent, the Central
Bureau of Statistics (CBS) said Monday January 1 in its
preliminary estimates of the national accounts.
Cereal Information from the Guide to Chodosh, USA

According to the latest update from the Guide (December 31),
General Mills Cereals sold in Israel, Europe and elsewhere
are made in the USA. Sometimes they are packed in Europe,
but they are still produced in the U.S. and sent in bulk
shipments to Europe. Therefore, the Chodosh cutoff dates
given in the Guide for General Mills cereals are good for
Israel and Europe as well.
Elad City Council Convenes for First Time

The Elad Municipal Council finally convened for its
inaugural meeting on 18 Kislev. Although elections to the
Council took place three months ago and the coalition --
composed of representatives of Shas, Beyachad and Mafdal --
was also formed at that time, this was the Council's first
meeting.

American Roshei Yeshiva and Rabbonim Hold Emergency
Meeting for Keren Shevi'is

Scores of roshei yeshiva, admorim and rabbonim, as well as
other spiritual leaders of chareidi Jewry in the United
States convened for a special emergency meeting held in the
Adas Yaakov Beis Medrash of the Admor of Novominsk. The
meeting was initiated by HaRav Elya Svei, rosh yeshiva of
the Philadelphia yeshiva, along with the Admor of
Novominsk.
Buses Went Up Monday, Gas Prices Down

Public transport tariffs rose as of Monday (January 1) by an
average of two percent. According to the new tariff, a bus
ride inside Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and cities in Gush-
Dan will now cost 4.80 NIS instead of 4.70 NIS. In other
cities and settlements the cost of a bus ride will be 4.10
NIS instead of 4.00 NIS.
Arson in Haifa Synagogue

Haifa residents were shocked by a fire that consumed
sifrei kodesh in the city's Ohel Moshe-Shatz Vishnitz
Synagogue. The fire on Shabbos parshas Vayeitzei was
miraculously extinguished before reaching the sifrei
Torah.

Torah World Tried to Honor Court Rulings; Court Tries to
Uproot Torah World
After all the efforts of the Torah world for over two years
to honor the orders of the High Court about providing a
legal basis for the draft deferrals of yeshiva students, the
wHigh Court has declared war on the Torah community by
ordering the Israeli army to draft all yeshiva students as
soon as possible.
