Rebbetzin Hilda Sheincha Nebenzahl o"h
by Betzalel Kahn

On Wednesday night, 5 Nisan, a large throng headed by rabbonim and talmidei chachomim accompanied Rebbetzin Hilda Sheincha Nebenzahl, widow of R' Yitzchok Halevi Nebenzahl, zt"l, on her last earthly journey. She was niftar at the end of the sheva brochos week of her great granddaughter.

Rebbetzin Nebenzahl, daughter of Rav Yeshayahu Hacohen Hollander -- one of the founders of Agudas Yisroel -- was born in Germany in 5670 (1910). She grew up in a home saturated with emunas chachomim and love of Torah. She yearned to live in Eretz Hakodesh and in 5693 (1933) moved to Eretz Yisroel with her husband, R' Yitzchok zt"l, a G-d-fearing person who respected talmidei chachomim and performed many acts of chesed.

She assisted her husband in all of his activities and dedicated herself to the Torah-true chinuch of Jewish girls in the Beit Esther school in Jerusalem.

She helped many immigrant families and families in distress in the Katamon neighborhood, and in 5736 (1976), together with her husband, moved to the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.

She was held in high esteem by gedolei Yisroel of the previous generation: the Rov of Tchebin, zt"l, HaRav Zalman Sorotzkin zt"l, and HaRav Abramsky, zt"l, as well as by HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt"l, who was niftar only a few years ago.

Her love of Torah and kibbud talmidei chachomim was rare. Even after her husband's petirah she continued to aid Torah institutions and needy families in a generous, genial manner. She was outstanding in her tsnius and simplicity, hiding her meritorious deeds in a remarkable way. Never complaining, she devoted her entire life to others. Until her final day, she was very meticulous in her mitzvah observance. Late in life, she helped found a kollel headed by her grandson, HaRav Zvi Gefen.

Words of parting were delivered by her son HaRav Avigdor Nebenzahl, the rav of the Jewish Quarter, and her son Reb Yeshaya. She is survived by a blessed generation that is following the path she and her husband charted.
