Observations: List of Phony Food Colorings
by N. Katzin
For some reason anti-food coloring radicals, or just
misguided people, are distributing an entirely unfounded
"List of Dangerous Food Colorings."
The Health Ministry's National Food Service has given notice
that the list has no scientific basis and has not been
recognized by a health organization or any other authorized
organization. The hospitals cited at the top of the list
deny any ties to the list. The Food Service emphasizes that
the food colorings and other additives that have received
approval in Israel are safe, and are based on directives and
legislation by the International Health Organization and
authorized bodies in the European Community and in the
US.
The truth regarding the list of "dangerous food colorings"
was first revealed three years ago in the consumer column of
the Hebrew edition of Yated Ne'eman. Thousands of
copies were distributed free of charge "for the public
benefit" to yeshiva students, seminary students, passersby,
etc., and caused considerable panic. A Yated Ne'eman
inquiry showed that the anonymous list--appearing under the
title "Venishmartem me'od lenafshoseichem"--is phony,
unauthorized and useless. Most of the names listed as
"carcinogens" or "dangerous carcinogens" are perfectly safe
for use and are even natural. One example from the list is
an additive called E-330, which appears as "the most
dangerous carcinogen" when in fact it consists of citric
acid derived from lemons and other citrus fruits.
