HOME & FAMILY PREPARING FOR THE FUTURECorporal Punishment by R' Zvi Zobin The word `corporal' comes from the Latin word corpus -- body. The only non-death corporal punishment mentioned by the Torah is that of malkos, flogging, which was to a maximum of 39 lashes. In addition, Beis Din had the power to administer makos mardus to someone who rebelled against their jurisdiction and these floggings had no maximum number.
ADD and Self Esteem One of the most formidable challenges in education today is ADD. What is ADD, how is it affecting the educational process, and what can be done about it? These questions are particularly relevant to us since Israel and the United States are two of the countries where this condition is most widespread.
Making Ends Meet
Part I
Practically, there are two ways to have money -- earning and
not spending. While our yearly income is determined at Rosh
Hashona, how much of it we get to keep depends a lot on us.
Prayer, Charity and Good Deeds help us to merit our
sustenance and to help make it last. But the valorous women
of families with many children have found ingenious ways to
help stretch their budgets and make their incomes go a
little further.
The following announcement appeared in Yated Hebrew and
deserves the English readers' attention:
In view of the difficult circumstances in which we find
ourselves in Eretz Yisroel, where every heart aches to hear
the increase of tragedies and troubles that pursue our
people, we have come to rouse the women and daughters of our
people in the various possible ways we can improve our
tzniyus, which is the very lifeblood of our makeup.
And who must be urged, if not those who are receptive and
concerned over these very matters? Baila Feinberg and Ruchy Braun decided that they wanted a `different' Shabbos experience. The two friends had been studying in seminary in Eretz Yisroel for two years and had exhausted their respective supply of relatives.
A Tribute to Chippa Bayla (Carol) Weinberger, ob'm Multitudes are bereft at the passing of Chippa Bayla (Carol) Weinberger, surrogate mother to hundreds and tireless worker for the Klall. Rebbetzin Weinberger passed away on Shabbos Parshas Behaaloscho with most of her children present. It was her father's yahrzeit and her brother's shloshim. Her funeral was attended by hundreds of mourners, each of whom felt that s/he had lost their own mother.
Your Medical Questions Answered! In our last article in this series, we discuss donating and receiving blood. Many people are familiar with the ABO system of blood types. Most people are type O and therefore can only accept a transfusion of type O blood. Should they receive other types, their body would attack these cells and cause them to hemolyze, or explode. Many people are type A or type B or type AB, which won't cause damage to type A or type Bs. Type O can be tolerated by A, B, or AB, but it is safer to give the right type.
