Barak Wants to Press His Secular Revolution
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
Back from a week of unproductive meetings on the peace
process in the U.S., Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak will
make his plan to reform religious-secular ties the focus of
his efforts. Barak is pessimistic about chances for an
agreement with the Palestinians, which remains his preferred
goal, and chances are also slim for his forming any sort of
reasonable government.
Analysis
The Proposal for Public Transportation on Shabbos
by Mordecai Plaut
Is it another empty plan? Is it merely the opening shot in
the next election campaign? Is it Barak's real conviction?
Most important, will anything be done about it? These are the
questions raised by Barak's resounding declaration about two
weeks ago that he aims to foment a "secular revolution."

With the growth of the observant Jewish community have come

Thoughts About the Approaching Shmitta
The Vilna Gaon points out that there are two mitzvos that
encompass our entire bodies: Succa and yishuv Eretz
Yisroel. Taking effect as it does on the yom tov of the
same name, and with conditions that require us to be aware of
the Succa itself, the Succa very much emphasizes to us our
service to Hashem.

SONG OF ASCENT From a Small Community to the Big
City
In Part Two of this series, two American `transplants', or
chutznikiot describe their absorption in Israel. In
the eyes of both, the point of attraction to life here is not
lifestyle or mentality, but clearly only a high spiritual
level and the existence of Torah centers that enable perfect
Torah study for the husband.
