Shabbos Struggle in Petach Tikvah

The cry of Shabbos was sounded this past Friday by the moro de'asra of Petach Tikvah, HaRav Boruch Shimon Solomon, who is also the rosh yeshiva of Nachlas Dovid, who, along with other rabbonim of the city, went down to the shopping mall at the city's Yarkonim junction to protest the opening of stores and marketing chains there on Shabbos for commercial purposes.

13 Iranian Jews Including the Rav Arrested for Spying

The Chief Rabbi of south Iran, Rav Zadmar, is among 13 Jews who were arrested and charged with spying for Israel, a capital crime in Iran. According to some reports, they were arrested at their homes in Shiraz the night of the seder. The reports have been circulating for some time, but were only confirmed by Iranian authorities on Monday.

UTJ Denies It Has Agreed to Join Barak Government

United Torah Judaism denied emphatically that it had agreed in any way to join a government headed by Ehud Barak. An editorial in the Hebrew language Yated Ne'eman entitled "Lehadam" (Lo Hoyu Devorim Mei'olom) explained that the only activity so far has been the basic talks that are part of the routine of forming any coalition, and they do not signal any special willingness or fundamental agreement or even interest in joining the government in formation.

Three years after the "mad cow" scandal erupted in Europe, a new panic is spreading throughout the world in the wake of the "cancerous chicken" epidemic. Many countries, including Israel, now forbid the importing of poultry and poultry products from Belgium. Kosher consumers should note that products with a good hashgocho are not known to suffer from any of the contamination.

Jewish Charlatan Takes his Show to England

Moshe Morgenstern of New York, a retired accountant, was in London this week in his worldwide quest for publicity. Morgenstern has assumed a rabbinical role although it is not known if he has a legitimate rabbinical ordination. The claim that garners him the most publicity is that he annuls Jewish marriages, thereby allowing women whose husbands refuse to give them a get to remarry.

15th Knesset Holds Its First Session

With a record 15 parties Israel's 15th Knesset convened on Monday for its inaugural session. 119 Knesset members declared their fealty and officially took office. MK Beiga Shochet was hospitalized and could not come.

On Tuesday, the 10th of Sivan, a large throng, headed by gedolei Yisroel and rabbonim of the Givat Shaul neighborhood of Jerusalem, accompanied the righteous Rebbetzin Raizel Braverman, o"h on her last earthly journey. She was the wife of HaRav Eliezer Lipa Braverman, the rosh yeshiva and director of the Yeshiva Hagedola Meah Shearim and its institutions.
