by Betzalel Kahn and V. Ariel

Last week, hespedim in memory of the rosh yeshiva of Ponovezh, Maran HaRav Dovid Povarski, zt"l were held in Torah centers throughout Eretz Yisroel. In all of these centers, bnei Torah, and in particular those from Ponovezh, gathered to pay homage to the memory of the great marbitz Torah,, vestige of dor deah, who produced so many students and fortified Torah in Eretz Hakodesh.

During the shiva week, thousands came to the Povarski home in Bnei Brak to comfort the bereaved. Among them were gedolei haTorah, rabbonim, dayanim, and roshei yeshiva from all over the country, as well as current students of Ponovezh and Ponovezh alumni, who found it difficult to absorb the great loss of the authentic transmitter of our tradition, who taught Torah and disseminated da'as Elokim for so many decades.

Many also came from abroad to console the bereaved, and the Povarski family also received numerous telephone calls from chareidi Torah centers throughout the world expressing the deep grief all Beis Yisroel feel.

On Wednesday evening, the 9th of Adar, stirring hespedim were delivered by HaRav Yaakov Edelstein, HaRav Shlomo Zalman Ullman, HaRav Dovid Menachem Schneider and HaRav Mordechai Gross in the Beis Medrash Yotzei Ponovezh.

On Thursday night, hespedim were held in many yeshivas in the country. One was held in the Grodno yeshiva in Ashdod, at which the roshei yeshiva spoke. In Jerusalem hespedim were delivered in the Chanichei Yeshivas Ponovezh beis medrash in Ezras Torah, by HaRav Kalman Landa, HaRav Yaakov Edelstein, HaRav Yitzchok Yeruchom Borodianski, and HaRav Boruch Pines

At an assembly in the Tzfas Yeshiva, hespedim were delivered by HaRav Dov Kaplan, HaRav Binyomin HaKohen Katz, HaRav Shlomo Maklev, and HaRav Osher Sternbuch.
