HaRav Dov Lando Speaks to Bnei Torah about Excitement in Learning

Speaking at a Chanukah gathering, HaRav Lando said:

The main and most fundamental thing is that all ambition must revolve around Torah, to grow and to become more involved in learning. Torah should be interesting. If someone hears a good question from HaRav Akiva Eiger it should electrify him, and he should not just feel, "Ok I heard something." May Hashem help everyone to use his powers in the best way.

Along with this one has to know that the main thing in Torah is to know what is true. Even though innovation is a big thing, seeking the truth is more important.

We must know that nascho deRav Abba, with all the questions and answers, is literally the word of Hashem. [In learning that sugya] we learn dvar Hashem. As Maran HaRav Chaim of Volozhin said, that is the greatest pleasure. In all the generations they enjoyed it, and those who immersed themselves in learning and lived their learning as the highest value, truly grew into greatness.

Chanukah Chizuk of the Rosh Hayeshiva

On Shabbos Chanukah, at the direction of Maran the Rosh Hayeshiva HaRav Gershon Edelstein, the Ponovezh yeshiva was in full session, to take advantage of the special status for Torah success that is present.

On Motzei Shabbos there was a special Chanukah mesiba and the Rosh Hayeshiva came with a special message.

We sang, "Ashrei ha'am shekochoh lo, ashrei ha'am sheHashem Elokov." What does this mean? The emunah of Am Yisroel that Hashem is Elokov. Hashem is the middah of Rachamim and Elokim is the middah of Din. Whoever has this emunah, Ashrei ha'am shekochoh lo! A person and a people that live with the emunah that Hashem is our Elokim, that everything is in the hand of Heaven, this makes us fortunate! That everything is the hands of Heaven and Somebody cares for us and gives us whatever we need. A people and an individual, one and many, who have this emunah, they are fortunate in This World.

Netanyahu's Court Cases — The Failures of the Prosecution

In a courtroom in Jerusalem, the proceedings in Netanyahu's trials are continuing. As time passes, as the list of witnesses lengthens, it becomes more and more clear that the entire case against Netanyahu is an embarrassment, a failure or a catastrophe — however you want to call it.

Two senior witnesses for the prosecution last week were almost declared "hostile witnesses," when they revealed the facts of their interrogation and how their testimony was extracted using unusual methods, and how none of the investigators seems to have actually heard what they had to say.

One of the witnesses — who served and continues to serve as a senior executive in the Ministry of Communication, and another witnesses who was in the period under investigation the chair of the Council of Cable and Satellites (which is the government body that actually had to approve the merger of Bezeq and YES which was the supposed bribe that Netanyahu had given), revealed the way their interrogation was conducted including deliberately misleading them and it being obvious that they investigators had decided in advance on their investigative target (Netanyahu's head) — all this before they even heard what they had to say.

Keser Torah: HaRav Aharon Kotler Zt'l, 2 Kislev 5753 — The Thirtieth Yahrtzeit

This extended appreciation of HaRav Aharon Kotler zt"l was first published in 1992 in the print edition. We are republishing it now for the 60th yahrtzeit, and also to make it available on the web.

Part 6

This week we present the final part in our series on Reb Aharon Kotler zt'l. While thus far we have attempted to portray something of his greatness in the themes discussed by Reb Aharon himself in his shmuess, "Kisroh Shel Torah," we now turn our attention to the role played by the Rosh Yeshiva as the leader of his generation.

It is surely no exaggeration to say that during the two decades after his arrival in the United States, Reb Aharon emerged as the leader and spokesman of a powerful resurgence of Torah-true Judaism, the far-reaching effects of which are ever growing greater with the passage of time.

There are two factors which run thread-like through every chapter of the story of Reb Aharon's communal involvement. First, his love and concern for every one of his fellow Jews. The incredible burden of Klal Yisroel's concerns that he shouldered was merely an extension of the same devotion which he displayed to the needs of each individual, every one of whom was "an only son" to him, as we saw last week.

Second, his insistence on adherence to pure Torah ideals in all aspects of Jewish life. ...

The Brisker Rov - New Findings

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Excerpts from volume 3 of the series HaRav miBrisk - a biography of HaRav Yitzchok Zeev Soloveitchik in Hebrew. HaRav Shimon Yosef Meller opens new vistas for us with his unique revelations.

Part I

The books of HaRav Shimon Yosef Meller need no introduction. They have become famed throughout the world as unique and superlative works which have become a cornerstone for every Jewish household, with every Jewish library respecting their reputation.

The books include the series "Shai LaTorah" in five volumes, the four volumes of "Uvdos Vehanhogos leBeis Brisk", "Nasich Mamleches HaTorah" - excerpts from the life of HaRav Simcha Zissel Broide.

But his supreme masterpiece, published in the last year-and-a- half, is the biography and excerpts from the life of the Brisker Rov, HaRav Yitzchok Zeev Halevi Soloveitchik, in two volumes. Recently, the author has been working hard to complete and publish the third and last volume, which includes chapters beginning from the year 5710 (1949) until that bitter day of erev Yom Kippur 5720 (1959), when the Rov ascended to the Heavens.

Volume three will cover important aspects of the life of the Rov, such as "Chosomo Emess," a special chapter dealing with "Inyonei Chinuch," another on matters of "hashkofoh," another on the time he spent in Switzerland, as well as special chapters on the controversies that swept the Jewish community in Eretz Yisroel in his time, such as the drafting of women, the excavations of graves, a political coalition with the National Religious, the swimming pool in Yerushalayim, the clubhouse dispute in Jerusalem, and more.

Those chapters which deal with the Brisker Rov's leadership role have tremendous importance. Indeed, this is the first time a comprehensive work has been produced which is most particular about the accuracy of facts, is based on an in- depth investigation, on audio and visual testimony, a cross- check of information, and an uncompromising criticism of the data collected on many incidents which then caused a storm among the chareidi sector in Eretz Yisroel.

The Psak

a heartwarming story by Sudy Rosengarten

It was Chanuka in Israel. That meant no school, at least not for the girls, lots of latkes and doughnuts, and loads of fun with family and friends visiting. For Elky, it meant finally getting together with her best cousin, Chani, in Bnei Brak, for a couple of days, something she'd been looking forward to for as long as she could remember.

So now, the two ten-year-olds were down in the garden, building castles in the sandbox and talking about those things they never spoke about to anyone but to each other.

"You know," Chani was saying, and it sounded to Elky as though she was close to tears, "it's so sad coming home from school every day and never finding my mother at home..."

"What's so sad about that?" asked Elky, pushing stubborn strands of black hair out of her eyes. "My mother is always at home and I never thought I was supposed to be happy about it."

"But don't you feel you want to tell her how your day went? Don't you need her to listen to all your stories about all the things that happened to you in school?"

"Big deal!"

"But don't things ever happen to you in school that you feel you have to tell your mother about because it's making you so miserable?"
