(Two Letters)
Holy Letter of HaRav Chaim and HaRav Gershon

To my brothers and friends, dear Bnei Torah: Greetings and Blessings.

With the approach of the bein hazmanim, we must bear in mind what Chazal said in Pirkei Avos (3:5), "Whoever shoulders upon himself the yoke of Torah is exempted from the yoke of the government and of parnossa, and whoever shuns it etc." The present situation calls for us to increase merits since a grave danger hovers over the continued survival of the very foundations of our sacred Torah in Eretz Yisroel. Without the merit of Torah, who knows what will be? When there are fewer immersed in Torah study, that merit is lacking for the entire Klal.

Chareidi Jewry is a Full-fledged Part of American Jewry

Dr. Irving (Shmuel) Lebovics is in Israel at the head of a delegation of Am Echad, sent to lobby the new government of Israel about American Jewry. He sat for an interview with Yated Ne'eman in Jerusalem.

Dr. Lebovics says:

It seems that many in Israel think that the Diaspora Jews are overwhelmingly Reform and Conservative. In expressing concern about relationships with "Diaspora Jewry" the assumption is always that they are the Reform and Conservative with their well-known biases.

First of all, according to a recent study conducted by the Pew Foundation, only 54% of American Jews identify themselves with the Reform or Conservative movements, and the vast majority of them are aged 50 and over. In actuality, only 20% of American Jews belong to a Temple of any of the above. The Reform movement itself claims to have 1.5 million members while the Conservative boasts 600,000 members.

R' Shmuel notes that these figures do not reflect the true situation in America. The facts are distorted and do not properly represent the huge Orthodox public in the country. Since this survey was conducted through email and not by phone, as in the past, it did not reach the majority of the Orthodox public and therefore, failed to represent it properly.

Remembering the Churban — With Tears!

This essay was originally published in 1995.

Yet Another Tisha B'Av

It was the night of Tisha B'Av a couple of years ago. Thousands of Yidden were assembled in Kikar Shabbos — the intersection between Geula and Meah Shearim in Yerushalayim. Annually on the night of Tisha B'Av, droshos used to take place at this venue, lamenting the churban of the Beis Hamikdash and the desecration of Jewish graves that continues, and exhorting the participants to rectify those sins which had caused the destruction then, and are blocking its reconstruction today.

The famous maggid Rav Yaakov Galinsky began his speech with the timely words of the novi Yirmiyahu (Chapter 8:20): "Ovar kotzir, coloh kayitz, ve'adaiyen lo noshonu" — The harvest season has passed, the summer has finished, and our salvation has still not arrived." His sweet voice and unique maggid-niggun blended together with the stillness of the night to make a deep impression on his audience. "Who would have believed a year ago, that this year we would be assembled here yet again on Tisha B'Av!" cried Reb Yaakov.

Kelm -- The Silent Furnace

by Tzvi Munk

Beis Kelm is the title of the recently published sixth volume in a series devoted to the spiritual heritage and the towering personalities of Kelm mussar. Previous volumes in the series, which is published by Machon Sifsei Chachomim, presented some of the writings of the members of this school of mussar, such as their chiddushim, notes and records of spiritual undertakings. The new volume illuminates the lives of the great men who led the Talmud Torah for the eighty years of its existence, first in Grobin and later in Kelm.

Since the yahrtzeit of the Talmud Torah and the town of Kelm is the 5th of Av, we are first presenting this account of the last years of Kelm, and plan to publish material about the earlier years during Elul.

The Final Chapter of Kelm: The Last Leaders

Two towering personalities presided over the fearsome final chapter in the story of the illustrious Talmud Torah of Kelm. They were brothers-in-law -- sons-in-law of Rav Nochum Zeev Ziv zt'l -- HaRav Doniel Movshovitz zt'l, Hy'd and HaRav Gershon Miadnik zt'l, Hy'd.

Lessons of the Churban: A Letter From the Alter of Kelm Zt'l

The Alter of Kelm zt'l wrote the following letter and had copies sent out to the members of his circle. A copy of the letter, originally taken from a copy handwritten by the Alter's talmid HaRav Shmuel Hillel Sheinker zt'l (whose role in founding Yeshivas Or Chodosh in Yerushalayim was the subject of an article in the parshas Terumoh edition of our paper), recently came to light. At the end of the general letter, there is a personal note to the Alter's son, HaRav Nochum Zeev Ziv zt'l, which has never previously been published with the Alter's other writings and which is relevant to the present period of bein hametzorim.

Addressing the Group

Listen my friends, faithful comrades, who have banded together to take Torah's path and turn our hearts toward mussar -- those who are together in our yeshiva in Kelm, in Grobin, Slobodka, Kovna and Lomzhe -- precious young men, who are trained to bear the yoke of Torah and mussar from their youth. May Hashem bless you and grant you success in this world and the next.

Extremely Effective Ways to Discipline Small Children

by Elisheva Leah Nadler

Many parents and teachers of small children would be surprised and relieved to learn that undesirable behaviors can often be prevented by asking ourselves, "Has this child slept enough, eaten well, and had enough to drink?" Or even, "Is s/he dressed appropriately for the weather?" Let's look more closely at ways to create positive experiences with the children around us.

SLEEP is critical in determining how well a child behaves. Often, the younger children in large families do not get the sleep they need because they want to be part of all the evening activities. These curious youngsters benefit from an afternoon nap or learning to submit to a soothing bedtime routine at an age-appropriate hour. One set of parents I know solves this problem by having one parent settle the younger child(ren) down to sleep at six or seven while the other parent looks after the older set. If an overtired child misbehaves in a preschool setting, letting him rest is often the most effective discipline technique.
