Israel will Require Ugly Packaging for Cigarettes and Smoking Paraphernalia

The Knesset voted to require all cigarette packages to be colored with the color that market researchers selected as the ugliest color in the world: Pantone 448c. The idea is that the packaging be as unattractive as possible to deter people from smoking. The restrictions apply to e-cigarettes as well.

The color, a greenish brown, is used in several countries in Europe, including the UK and France. It is not known yet how effective it has proven. The Knesset also voted to make the warning texts on the packages larger.

The regulations will take effect in a year.
