A team of professional divers in Hungary in conjunction with
Jewish organizations including Ichud Hatzalah have begun
this past Tuesday on a search for bones of Jewish martyrs
who died in Hungary during the course of the Holocaust when
they were shot to death on the banks of the Danube River.
This search project follows in the wake of a meeting of
Interior Minister Rabbi Arye Deri with his Hungarian
counterpart, Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister,
Shandor Pintor, who responded to Rabbi Deri's request and
stated that he would immediately allocate a budget for
experts and advanced technology to aid in this search.
Jewish organizations will cooperate with the local experts
in order to bring to a Jewish burial the remains of
thousands of Jews who were shot to death at the end of WWII,
from Kislev 5705, by the Iron Cross movement in Hungary on
the banks of the Danube, and their bodies' subsequent fell
into the river.
The famous monument of shoes was erected on the banks of the
Danube on the very site of the murderous tragedy. This will
be the first time that such a project of dredging up Jewish
remains from the water and bring them to a proper Jewish
burial is being undertaken.
Israeli experts believe that even after more than 70 years
it may be possible to locate human remains in the river.
