The Rav of Barcelona on the Situation in Catalonia

By Yisrael Rosner

The Rav of Barcelona, a member of the Conference of European Rabbis, HaRav Meir Bar-Chen, discussed this past Monday the Catalonian struggle for independence in an interview with a Yated Ne'eman correspondent. He said that the Jewish community in Barcelona has no official position regarding a ruling government in this region but the present situation certainly directly affects the solidity and strength of the Jewish community in Barcelona and threatens its future. Barcelona is a large city in the Catalonia section of Spain that has been trying to declare itself independent from Spain.

According to HaRav Bar-Chen, "The struggle of the residents of this region in Spain has already caused a big drop in the value of real estate here. Many firms have already begun leaving the area and others plan to do so in the near future. Additional estate holders and owners of plants who are members in the kehilla are weighing a move from here to more stable places due to the precarious political situation and this will surely have a negative influence on the future of the community, both regarding its strength, stability and economic viability."
