Polish Advertising Campaign about the Holocaust
By Yisrael Reisner
Many Israelis have recently been exposed to a short promotional video publicized by the Polish prime minister who seeks to capture Israeli awareness and persuade the public that "the Polish people are not to blame for Nazi crimes." The clip attempts to arouse empathy for the suffering of the Poles by the Nazis and establish the idea of German death camps for them inclusive.
It seems that the Poles are determined to rewrite history and launch a new collective memory regarding their place and responsibility regarding their role in the Jewish Holocaust. "The Law of the Holocaust" which was just passed there, arousing a storm in Israel, is only one step in this campaign, a legislative one, in the war of re-identification. The clip, disseminated through various websites in Israel and addressed to the Israel public, seeks to sharpen this message. It does not attempt to threaten from a legal approach anyone who dares to blame the Poles for Jewish genocide but does try, through media hype, to convince the viewer that what happened is simply not their fault, like the cry of the plundered Cossack.
