In these days the first centralized Israeli Army registration for yeshiva students will take place in municipal buildings, not controlled by the Army. On Tuesday hundreds of yeshiva students from Tifrach, Netivot Ofakim and other places in the area, were allowed to register with the army in a public building in Netivot. This is the first time this has been allowed in the history of the State of Israel.
The event was attended by the representatives of the Vaad Hayeshivos who worked hard to bring about the arrangement. It carries the previously won procedure of registering all students from a yeshiva together, a step further. The environment is not under the control of the army, and in many cases the location if significantly closer to where the students study. The students who were registered in Netivot, for example, had to go to Beer Sheva in the past.
A similar arrangement was made in Ashdod, and will be also done in other places.
The large number of yeshiva students and also the permission for representatives of Vaad Hayeshivos and of the yeshivas themselves to be present, is an important concession on the part of the army authorities, and prevents any improper pressure from the army on weaker or more gullible students.
