The Knesset plenum approved this Tuesday, in its first reading, the proposed amendment to the draft law legislated a year ago. In the coming days the Foreign and Security Committee will discuss and prepare for the second and third readings of the amendment in the Knesset plenum for final approval and legal promulgation.
The amendment was approved with a majority vote of 60 MKs from the Coalition against 45 opposing votes from the Opposition.
A year ago, in the previous government, the Yesh Atid party under Yair Lapid passed the draft law imposing criminal penalties on those not serving in the army under certain conditions. This present amendment, presented according to a coalition agreement of Likud with the United Torah Jewry party, comes to rescind this clause.
The amendment also includes additional changes enabling yeshiva students to continue their Torah studies undisturbed.
The amendment to the Draft Law, which is integral to the very essence of the Torah world, has been transmitted by representatives of Torah leadership directly from their superiors, rabbonim standing in counsel with the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah at every step of the way. Under their directive, these representatives must keep total distance from the media on the subject which could, ch'v, thwart the very continued existence of the Torah world against those who rise up against it. Yated Ne'eman, the shofar voice of gedolei hador, adheres to these instructions so that all yeshiva students and avreichim will be able to persevere undisturbed or threatened in their studies.
