New Rabbi for Frankfurt

Rabbi Avichai Appel, who has served for the past eight years as chairman of the Orthodox Rabbinical Committee of Germany, the ORD, was unanimously chosen three months ago by the members of the Kehilla Committee as Chief Rabbi of Frankfurt, to serve in tandem with Rabbi Chaim Shoshan, who has served in this post for the past four years.
The Frankfurt Jewish community consists today of some eight thousand members, half of whom originate from Russia. The community boasts four active synagogues: a central one and three local ones. It also maintains educational institutions consisting of kindergartens and a school with an enrollment of six hundred students. At the beginning of the 5777 school year, four first grade classes opened with eighty students. The Kehilla has a broad spectrum of activities for its children and youth within a complete structure of religious studies supplementation which the law calls for across the board in all schools. It hosts Shabbatonim and seminars. The community also maintains a comprehensive kashrus supervision; a Senior Citizens Home; evening classes for adults; the Amichai youth movement and a network of social welfare and medical help under the name "Central Welfort Shtalle Yuden in Deutschland." This network has branches throughout Germany which is administered by the Welfare Ministry which is active and efficient.
