Remarks at a gathering in Bnei Brak.
Rabbenu Yonah writes at the beginning of his sefer: "Among the blessings which Hashem bestowed upon His creations was to pave the way for them to rise up from the trap of their own making and sinning so as to rescue their souls from doom and turn away His wrath from them..."
Doom means Gehennom. Hashem, in His great kindness, prepared the way for us to be saved from Gehennom. Many verses and passages in gemara show how one can save his soul from the yetzer hora, and even if he has already sinned, there is a way to repent and salvage one's soul from doom, although the best way is to prevent oneself from falling into the abyss to begin with.
We have been gathered here by the Committee of Rabbonim to fortify the walls of religion and to rescue this generation from Gehennom. This generation, sadly, has many pitfalls leading to Gehennom. The Ramban writes that the mere opening to Gehennom is dreadful! And all the more so, Gehennom itself whose heat is sixty times stronger than fire as we know it.
And just as we are familiar with the rule of nullification in a sixtieth, it means not only a sixtieth in quantity but also qualitatively, and as such it is altogether different in concept. And just as we have no inkling of what Olam Haba is like, of which it is written, "No eye has seen it aside from You, Elokim," so can we not begin to imagine what Gehennom is like.
This activity to save [our brethren] from those technological devices leading to Gehennom is pure preservation of souls, rescue from the deepest abyss, from the lowest level of Gehennom. All those involved in this salvation work are truly meritorious and praiseworthy. Hashem will surely grant them Heavenly assistance since "whoever comes to be purified is duly assisted." If this refers to those who seek to purify themselves, how much more so is it true that those who come to purify others will be duly supported from Heaven.
With the help of Hashem, we will merit this siyata deShmaya to rescue the generation from Gehennom, and all those involved in doing so will experience much success.
