Blessed Increase in Torah Studiers

By Yechiel Sever

With the new yeshiva year beginning on Rosh Chodesh Elul, the numbers of those studying Torah in yeshiva in Eretz Yisroel increase, kein yirbu.

From information collected by Yated Ne'eman in cooperation with the Igud Menahalei Yeshivos, there are a total of about 2,100 yeshivos, with students from ages 13 on up. In the Israeli yeshiva ketanos, whose students generally range from ages 13-14 to 16-17 and study there for three years, there are some 32,000 students studying in 300 institutions. The rest include yeshiva gedolos and kollelim, where over 100,000 study at 1,800 institutions. In the yeshiva gedolos there are about 34,000 talmidim, in addition to some 4,100 students from chutz la'aretz. There are about 65,000 avreichim learning full time. These figures include only institutions that receive some part of their funding from the government of Israel.

Many thousands of others learn in various institutions that do not receive any support from the Israeli government.

These are tremendous numbers that reflect the commitment and sacrifice of many, especially avreichim, who persist in their dedication to Torah in the face of many obstacles and temptations.
