Interior Minister Must Decide about Tel Aviv Shabbos Law
By Yechiel Sever
This past Monday parshas Pinchos the Supreme Court ordered the Interior Minister, Silvan Shalom, to arrive at a decision within three months regarding the opening of businesses on Shabbos and Yom Tov in Tel Aviv.
The Tel Aviv Municipal Council certified a municipal bylaw last year allowing for opening of businesses on the day of rest. The then Interior Minister, Gideon Saar, announced at the time that due to his decision to retire, he would leave the decision on the matter in the hands of his successor. Thus he held up the implementation of the law. His successor, Gilad Ardan, did not deal with the matter, nor did Minister Shalom, who took over his post a month and a half ago, express his position in the matter.
