The police have been recommending fencing off the eastern section of Har Hazeisim and closing off the roads leading to the plot of graves with gates. This was discussed on Monday in the Interior Committee of the Knesset regarding security of this site.
Kedem Area Supervisor Kedem, Deputy Nitzav Chaim Shmueli, said, "We are under a difficult assault of terrorist attacks in Jerusalem. In May alone there was a deliberate hit-and-run attack on Har Hazeisim against police stationed there, with no lack of motivation. I am prepared to invite anyone to see how the police are putting their lives in danger. The police post on the mountain has twenty-six officers and soldiers from Border Patrol on round-the-clock watch, mainly protecting the access roads for some daily 2,000 visitors and tourists. The police recommendation is to fence in the eastern section of Har Hazeisim and close off the roads leading to the plots of graves, with gates."
MK Rabbi Uri Maklev said, "To my regret, the saying that `May you rest in your eternal place' is true for most gravesites and cemeteries, excluding that of Har Hazeisim. People refrain from being buried there despite the supposed security provisions and the situation is only deteriorating. Only a day-to-day report on every occurrence and how it was dealt with can help."
