A Moving Gathering Commemorating the Shloshim of the Sasson Children
By Yechiel Sever
Our hearts still refuse to digest the terrible calamity of the tragic death of the seven Sasson children which took place in Brooklyn several weeks ago. Alongside our aching hearts, Jews throughout the world cannot help but be awed by the sublime spirit displayed by the bereaved father, R' Gavriel Sasson, who rises up from the ashes and sanctifies Hashem's Name with his messages replete with emunah, and in his steadfast, heroic stand in the face of his awful loss.
During the period that the family lived in Eretz Yisrael, three of the deceased children attended the Shira Chadasha cheder, under the direction of HaRav Eliyahu Zeidel. Their classmates and rebbeim remember the children well for their refinement and yiras Shomayim. Feeling the aching gap intensely, the hundreds of students of this Talmud Torah and their parents gathered for an assembly marking the shloshim of the victims' ascent to Heaven, with a strong message of interpersonal improvement delivered by gedolei Torah and by the mourning father himself, Rav Gavriel.
At the assembly it was announced that a sefer Torah was started in memory of the pure souls that is planned to be dedicated on the first yahrtzeit.
