75% of Settlement Budgets go to Bayit Yehudi

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The government Knesset Comptroller Committee dealt this past Monday with the budget for the Settlement Budget of the World Zionist Organization in Israel. The committee chairman, MK Rabbi Amnon Cohen (Shas), demanded that the Comptroller examine the charge that 75% of the support for settlement organizations is transferred to bodies identified with Habayit Hayehudi, contrary to the real interests of such a budget, amidst duplication and blatant favoritism.

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni, who initiated the hearing, said, "There is no address today which deals with this problem of supervision and execution of the law, despite my correspondence regarding this problem with the government attorney general, who replies with ridiculous, banal letters. When I was chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee and had to transfer budgets to the settlements, everything was over and above board. And now, while a yeshiva student receives 250 shekel government support, a student of a Zionist `yeshiva' receives over 13,000 shekel, a sum more than fifty times as much. In addition, there is duplication support which the [reshuyot] local authorities cover up, and the budget intended for the aged and handicapped in public housing is deflected for the Torah settlers of Bayit Hayehudi."
