The Jewish community in Iran was in deep mourning with the death of its Chief Rabbi, HaRav Yosef Hamdani Cohen zt"l, who passed away during Shabbos parshas Tazria. The funeral took place on Sunday with the attendance of the members of the kehilla. He was brought to rest in the Jewish cemetery, Bahashtiya, in the capital Teheran.
HaRav Hamdani served in the rabbinate since 5754. As leader of the Jewish community in this Shiite Islamic republic, he was responsible for all the Jews in the country, whom he cared for and devotedly supervised the education of the youth according to Torah values and tradition.
He was the rabbi of the Succat Shalom synagogue in the Yosef Labad neighborhood of Teheran, maintained friendly relations with political factions in the government of this Islamic country and even met several times with the President of Iran.
