New Chareidi Magazine Katifa Begins Publication

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The first edition of chareidi magazine, Katifa, published on Thursday, is a major milestone that has been months in the making and is expected to make a significant impact on chareidi journalism.

Several months ago a handful of chareidi project backers and investors joined forces to publish the new magazine, which is designed to provide families a quality product, both in terms of professional presentation and appropriate content. The idea took shape to meet the needs of upstanding members of the chareidi public, from all streams and backgrounds, who are only willing to bring home quality reading material with careful oversight of the contents by a panel of rabbonim, similar to Yated Ne'emanand other publications founded by gedolei Yisroel zt"l.

The rabbonim told the publishers that "all of chareidi journalism began to meet the needs of the times, as a response to the Hebrew- language newspapers published in previous generations by Enlightenment and nationalist figures, based on an awareness that when enticements in the form of literature and journalism are readily available, all means must be utilized to defend against them, both by waging a constant battle against unworthy publications and by creating quality alternatives that will enable the Torah faithful to distance themselves from stumbling blocks in the form of the written word, which tends to lodge itself deep in the heart.

"In every time period a suitable alternative is created, according to the needs of that period, by altering the appearance and graphics of publications that are faithful to daas Torah. This does not necessitate even the slightest deviation from established principles regarding the contents. Today, a need has arisen for a kosher magazine under rabbinical supervision that will carry on the legacy of chareidi journalism and provide an alternative to unsuitable newspapers and weeklies."
