UTJ to Coalition Chairman: Block Tzohar Legislation

United Torah Judaism has decided to demand that Coalition Chairman MK Zeev Elkin (likud) refrain from bringing the Tzohar Law for a first reading in the Knesset, since it would uproot the status quo and blatantly violate the coalition agreement and the government's fundamental guidelines.


Gafni Receives Awards for Assistance to Chatzor Haglilit

Finance Committee Chairman MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni was awarded two honors for the assistance he provided to Chatzor Haglilit and for keeping the Pri HaGalil plant from shutting its doors. Factory owner Oshik Ephraim said were it not for Rabbi Gafni's intervention, the plant would have remained locked and boarded.


HaRav Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg zt"l

The Torah world and all of the Jewish people suffered a great blow with the passing of HaRav Chaim Pinchos Scheinberg zt"l, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Torah Or, Tuesday night. A member of Degel HaTorah's Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah and the rov of Jerusalem's Mattersdorf neighborhood, he was a pillar of Torah and halacha, a prolific author of profound writings on various masechtos and for seven decades served as a guide and teacher for innumerable students, many of whom went on to assume prominent positions in the Torah world. As a young man he himself had the merit of forming bonds with HaRav Yeruchom Levovitz and HaRav Shimon Shkop zt"l.


Thousands of Safrus Products were Printed and Sold as Kosher

Lishkas Hakodesh, a public watchdog Stam (the Hebrew acronym of Sifrei Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzas) organization, has uncovered a massive fraud on the part of the well-known sofer Shimon Cohen. Cohen writes with truly beautiful letters, and it was known that he had made a computer font based on his handwriting. In the course of a din Torah in Jerusalem, it was discovered that the font had been used to print entire safrus products that were then overwritten in regular sofer ink. The products were sold to unsuspecting customers all over the world.


Torah World Cries Out on Yom Kippur Koton

Maranan verabbonon, the Rosh Yeshiva HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman, and HaRav Shmuel Halevi Wosner shlita reiterated calls to cry out to Heaven and do teshuvoh in light of the sorrows that have befallen Am Yisroel, and to plea for the recovery of Rabbenu Yosef Sholom ben Chaya Musha Eliashiv shlita, including Yom Kippur Koton and reciting Tehillim collectively.


Rain and Kinneret Watch

As of March 22 (28 Adar) 624 millimeters of rain had fallen in the Jerusalem area during the current season (August 1 to date). This represents 128% of the average rainfall for this period and 116% of the average rainfall for the entire season in the Jerusalem area which is 537 mm.


The Tiferes Shlomoh — HaRav Shlomoh Hacohen, zt"l, of Radomsk

After his nomination as Radomsker Rebbe, the Tiferes Shlomoh arrived in Radomsk on 19 Adar. Immediately he set about correcting longstanding mistakes and improper customs of the city.

How Many Americans are Learning in Israel?

In 5759 (the academic year 1998-99), a total of 109,956 talmidim, kein yirbu, learned in yeshivos, kollelim and other institutions under the supervision of the Ministry of Religions according to a new report of the Central Bureau of Statistics. Of these, 41 percent learned in kollelim, 27 percent learned in yeshivos gevohos, and 16 percent learned in other post-high school Torah institutions including women's institutions and trade schools.
