Germany Extends Payments to Ghetto Workers
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
After extended negotiations, the German government has agreed to a
demand by the Claims Committee to expand eligibility of ghetto
survivors to receive payments from the German national insurance
system. Holocaust survivors who worked in ghettos even not under
forced conditions will also be eligible for German national insurance
payments, as well as a one-time payment of 2,000 euros. The one-time
payment will be added to the monthly payment given by the German
Ghetto Fund. Until now it was not possible to receive both.
Claims Committee Chairman Julius Berman said it should be verified
that every ghetto survivor eligible for compensation is able to file a
request for both payments. "This is a recognition of the suffering and
hardships experienced by Jews who worked during the Nazi era under
conditions that are hard to even imagine."
Ghetto survivors who have not yet filed a request with the Ghetto Fund
are asked to do so immediately. All of the details related to filing a
request can be found at www.claimscon.org/ghettopension.
