Netanya: Hundreds Protest Plans to Open Mall on Shabbos

By L.S. Wasserman

Hundreds of residents from Ir Yamim, Ramat Polag and Kiryat Nordau in Netanya united to form a working committee to prevent the Ir Yamim Shopping Mall from opening for business on Shabbos and Jewish holidays. They contacted all of the officials involved in the matter, demanding that the mall keep its doors shut on Shabbos.

"Opening the mall would be a major blow to the sanctity of Shabbos in the area and could lead other store owners to open on Shabbos for competitive reasons, which would have dire consequences for the entire area," a figure from the Committee for Shabbos in Netanya told a Yated Ne'eman reporter this week. "We are pleading from the bottom of our hearts that the status quo not be disrupted in the area."

The working committee has recruited to its ranks Atty. Dr. Nissan Sharifi, who will work pro bono to put a stop to the attempt to open the mall on Shabbos and Jewish holidays.

The working committee is comprised of a rare alliance of residents from across the spectrum — new immigrants and veteran Israelis, immigrants from Western countries and immigrants from Eastern countries, traditionalists and even secular Jews.
