198,000 Thousand Holocaust Survivors Living Today in Israel

by G Leizer

A study released yesterday shows that some 198,000 Holocaust survivors are living in Israel today. In this past year, 12,000 died. Every hour, at least one more survivor is no longer alive.

A scanning of the applicants to the Welfare Fund for Holocaust Survivors this past year, some 52.5 thousand in number, reveals that over 10,000 survivors are childless while 54% of the applicants define themselves as solitary.

The Knesset Finance Committee authorized passage of a bill allowing needy Holocaust survivors to receive two pensions. The Treasury says that some 8,000 will be affected. Knesset Finance Committee chairman Rabbi Moshe Gafni worked for more than 13 years to pass this law. He said that he wanted to do more, but felt that something should be passed as soon as possible.
