A Committee for Reasonably Priced Apartments in Charish

By M. Green

In anticipation of creating the new city of Charish, a committee of askanim was created a year ago with the blessings and encouragement of gedolim, comprised of seasoned figures representing the many sectors of the chareidi population in the country. The committee's purpose is to ensure the marketing of apartments at reduced and reasonable prices, while preventing unfair competition which would necessarily raise these prices and sabotage the very underlying principle of the city's establishment, which is to ease the burden of thousands of young couples in acquiring proper living quarters.

The team of askanim, consisting of Rabbi Amir Krispal, Rabbi Meir Porush, Rabbi Mordechai Karelitz, Rabbi Refael Hoffman and Rabbi Rephael Pinchasi, met many times with the major construction firms, architects and contractors in the country, as well as with renowned lawyers. Rabbi Avraham Slonim, who has a rich record in creating housing projects for the chareidi public, has been privy to these meetings which dealt with apartment prices and various ways to deal collectively to ensure the guiding principle of a low market price.

Various propositions of prices/expenses and infrastructure were presented, indicating that a significant breakthrough can be achieved regarding the marketing of the apartments at reduced prices with the supplementary government support for land acquisition and development.
