Masses of People Go to the Rashbi Gravesite in Meiron
By Yechiel Sever

Peak readiness is in high gear on the part of security forces and Hatzolah workers as the yearly mass pilgrimage to the Rashbi gravesite in Meiron, which commenced Wednesday afternoon and continues until after Lag BaOmer. Over 4,600 policemen will be spread throughout the entire Meiron area and thousands of Ichud Hatzolah volunteers will be posted in special stations erected to provide emergency first aid to the visitors. The public will be praying for the intercession of R' Shimon bar Yochai and his son, R' Elazar, for the speedy and complete recuperation of Maran R' Yosef Shalom Eliashiv in particular, and for the yeshua of Klal Yisroel. A special public prayer will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Lag BaOmer in the compound of the cave for his recovery.

In their letter, publicized in Tuesday's paper, they write: "In view of the critical condition of Rabban shel Yisroel, Maran R' Yosef Shalom Eliashiv, the masses of Jewry and especially the students of chadorim, yeshivas and kollelim throughout the world, are urged to rouse heavenly mercy through prayer and intensified study for the full recovery of Rabbenu Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musha, in the hope that the A-mighty will not reject the prayers of the public and will send him a speedy and full recovery."

Charting a Course through the Antisemitism

by Mordecai Plaut

From a historical perspective it seems likely that the way the world has related to Jews in the past year is a return to "normalcy" and the relatively benign view of us that has dominated public discourse in the past half-century is the aberration.

Our Inner Enemy

by Yisroel Friedman

Weakening the Effects of Our Prayer

The yishuv is presently going through one of its most difficult periods. We need plenty of Heaven's mercy. Yishmoel's sword is still gleaming. He has not yet surrendered his age-old weapon. When an individual is in need, he pours his heart out to his Creator. Troubles of the Klal, also happen because HaKodosh Boruch Hu desires their prayers. Reb Yeruchom zt'l, tells us that "the reason for all misfortunes is that they are a means of attaining, `and they cried out' (Shemos 14:10), whereby Hashem's Name is invoked," (Daas Chochmoh Umussar, vol.1 pg.7). Now is such a time, a time for "they cried out," a time for communal prayer.

The Smell of Burning Sifrei Torah in France

by Arnon Yaffe reporting from Paris

The acrid smell of cinder and ash was still rising from the pile of siddurim, machzorim, gemoras, tallisos, scorched tables and chairs, blackened walls and broken iron beams--all that remains of Or Aviv, a beis knesses in a mixed Jewish-Arab neighborhood of North Marseille. The six hundred Jewish families, immigrants from North Africa who built the beis knesses twenty years ago, stood saying Tehillim. Ten thousand Jews attended the burial of the five sifrei Torah burned in the aron kodesh. Their scorched remains were carried on a litter and covered with a tallis.
