Wave of Antisemitic Attacks Strikes Montreal
By R. Hoffman
A wave of antisemitic attacks hit Montreal last weekend. Montreal
Police believe the attacks against five Jewish institutions in the
city are linked. The incidents were the latest in a string of attacks
against Jewish institutions during the past year.
According to reports, windows were smashed at four botei
knesses, a day-care center and a Jewish school located at the
western edge of Cote St. Luc and Hampstead in West Montreal. Reporters
wrote that some of the shattered windows were covered with planks by
shul-goers while others were left as is and were visible on Monday.
Property inside the buildings was also destroyed. The damage is
estimated at several thousand dollars. Police have opened an
investigation into the incidents.
The botei knesses involved in the attacks were Beth Rambam,
Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem and Beth Zion synagogues in Cote St. Luc
and Dorshei Emet synagogue in Hampstead. Academie Yavne, a Jewish
school in Cote St. Luc, was also hit. Whether the attacks took place
on Shabbos afternoon or Sunday morning remains unclear.
