UTJ Blocks Vote on Draft Deferment Law

By Eliezer Rauchberger

Following demands by MKs Rabbi Moshe Gafni and Rabbi Uri Maklev, the Foreign Affairs and Security Committee plenum was prevented on Tuesday from voting on and passing the findings of a team the committee formed, headed by MK Yochanan Plesner (Kadima), on the issue of the law for IDF deferments for full-time yeshiva and kollel students.

The team claimed that the law in its current form has failed and that the entire system should be revamped.

Rabbi Gafni refused to sign the conclusions, and in reaction to the report, wrote to Committee Chairman MK Shaul Mofaz and to Knesset Legal Adviser Atty. Eyal Yanon a letter in which he argued that the very setup of the team was in violation of the law and Knesset regulations.

Rabbi Gafni asked the committee chairman not to hold a vote on the team's findings, which were supposed to be submitted as the Knesset's reply to the High Court, which has been reviewing the issue. The team was appointed outside of the normal Knesset channels and has no official standing.
