No Pictures of Victims Without Their Consent
by Yated Ne'eman Staff
The Knesset gave final approval to an initiative of MKs Rabbis Moshe
Gafni and Uri Maklev that prohibits publication of any picture of an
injured victim of a car accident, terrorist attack and the like,
without his consent of the consent of his family. The law is aimed at
protecting the privacy of people at a moment of particular distress,
and the law determines that the individual's right to privacy is
stronger than the freedom of expression of the media.
It is very common that the media publish pictures of victims of
accidents or terrorist attacks that hurt their feelings without any
permission. After the recent terrorist attack in Jerusalem, an
embarrassing photograph of a chareidi woman who had been injured was
published.
The media mostly opposed the law, but it was strongly supported in the
Knesset.
