False Kashrus Certificates Removed from Food Festival Booths in Old
City
By Yechiel Sever
Opponents of the "Treif Festival" in the Old City, including the
Jewish Quarter, continue to speak out against the event, where some of
the booths serve non-kosher food and even non-kosher meat, with
callous disregard for the sanctity of the Holy City.
During a tour conducted by HaRav Eliyohu Shlesinger, the head rov and
posek for the Jerusalem Religious Council's Kashrut Department, many
booth owners were found to have posted false kashrus certificates. The
certificates have been removed and inspectors were sent on Tuesday to
enforce the law.
According to an official notice HaRav Shlesinger released on Tuesday,
"The Festival of Tastes currently being held under the auspices of the
Jerusalem Municipality in the Old City and in the Jewish Quarter is
not under our supervision. The booth owners do not have kashrus
certificates and there is no supervision of the food sold there. Let
the public beware!"
Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Rabbi Yitzchok Pindrus, speaking as part of
United Torah Judaism's representation in the municipality, pointed out
that a subsidiary company belonging to the municipality is producing
the event — a blatant violation of the status quo in the city,
which has been upheld for many years. The festival is particularly
offensive since it is held near the Kosel Maarovi, he added.
